Efforts to improve education often fall short when faced with the negative impact of hunger and malnutrition on physical and cognitive development in children. In 2013, I-KODI launched a Lunchtime Feeding Program at the Konditi Primary School in Pap-Onditi. Now in its 7th year, the program provides a hot lunch to over 322 children each day. We provide basic food staples including rice, beans, maize and cooking oil on a monthly basis to the school.
On a typical day, mothers in the community rise early to prepare the food. At midday, children line up to wash their hands in a basin of clean water and to gather a clean plate.
Children receive a large portion of rice, maize and beans that contains important nutrients and protein. For many, this is the only meal they receive during the day.
Providing a simple hot meal has a lasting impact on the health of the children and a ripple effect in the community.
- Mothers are relieved of the burden of providing a meal for their children during the day.
- Children are able to stay in school and focus on their studies. Attendance goes up.
- Teachers are able to do their jobs more effectively. Learning improves, test scores rise.
- Children are better prepared to face each day and to make the most of their time in the classroom.
We invite you to join us in helping to promote these positive effects through the simple act of proving a daily hot meal.
