Scholarships

The impact of education on young people in developing countries is profound.

Girls who stay in school delay early marriage and childbearing. They are better able to earn income, provide for their families and invest money into the community. Boys escape a lifetime of subsistence farming and manual labor helping to break the cycle of poverty.

Each year, students in the 8th Grade at the Konditi Primary School take a national exam that, to a large extent, determines their future. The results are used to rank students both locally and within the district. Students who rank very highly may be selected for a national scholarship to attend high school.

But for most bright students, these scholarships are out of reach. The burden of paying for further education falls on their parents, relatives or caregivers. For most, any further education is not possible.

In 2013, with the help of generous donors, I-KODI initiated a scholarship program that provides financial support to students to attend high school. Selection is based on assessments provided by the local I-KODI Kenyan team, which gathers information on students, including test scores and family vulnerability.

Scholarship students

The program had a humble beginning. We began by sponsoring a single student, Calvince. He has since gone on to finish high school and recently earned his Bachelor’s degree (with High Honors) in Chemistry. Calvince is now pursuing his Master’s degree.

Now in its 7th year, the I-KODI scholarship program provides tuition support to 97 students who are enrolled in local and regional high schools. Half of these scholarships are awarded to bright and motivated girls.

There are more deserving students in the community. By helping to sponsor a student to attend high school, your donation provides a lasting investment not only in their future, but in the wellbeing of their families and the stability of the entire community.

$500 provides all expenses (tuition, room, board, uniforms, books, stationary) for a student to attend high school for 1 year.

$2,000 provides a student with a full high school education for 4 years at a local or regional high school.
