Scholarship Program

The impact of education on young people in developing countries is profound.

Girls who stay in school gain not just an education, but the means to delay marriage and childbearing. They are better able to earn income, provide for their families and invest money back into the community. Boys escape a lifetime of subsistence farming and manual labor helping to break the cycle of poverty.Girl student

Each year, students in the 8th Grade at the Konditi Primary School take a national exam that, to a large extent, determines their future. The results are used to rank students both locally and within the district. Students who rank very highly may be selected for a national scholarship to attend high school.

But for most bright students, these scholarships are out of reach. The burden of paying for further education falls on their parents, relatives or caregivers. For most, any further education is an impossible dream.

In 2013, with the help of generous donors, I-KODI initiated a scholarship program that provides financial support to students graduating from the Konditi Primary School.

Each year, I-KODI selects promising students for full sponsorships to local and regional high schools. Selection is based on assessments provided by the local I-KODI Kenyan team, which gathers information on students, including test scores and family vulnerability.

Scholarship students

The program had a humble beginning. We began by sponsoring a single student, Calvin, who has since graduated from high school and plans to attend university.

With the help of generous donors, we have expanded the program to offer 13 full scholarships in 2016. Of those awarded scholarships, 7 were given to bright and motivated girls.

There are currently more deserving students than we can support and we are dedicated to helping them all achieve their goals. By helping to sponsor a student (or two!) to attend high school, your donation provides a lasting investment not only in their future, but in the wellbeing of their families and the stability of the entire community.
